Enriching both the cultural identity of the Kven community and the artistic landscape

Kirsti Riesto is a significant figure in the realm of contemporary art and cultural preservation, particularly in Vadsø and within the Kveeni art community. From 2006 to 2022, she managed the Vadsø guest studio, a role in which she facilitated the exchange of artistic talent across borders while also fostering the development and recognition of Kveen art.

Riesto emphasizes the importance of community involvement in art projects, believing that people feel more connected to initiatives when they can see themselves reflected in the work. She has worked to ensure that art projects engage the local community, from children to the elderly, through workshops and exhibitions, thus enhancing the community’s understanding and appreciation of professional art. Additionally, she highlights the power of art residencies in creating meaningful connections and sustaining vibrant societies.

Her efforts also extend to supporting young artists, encouraging them to pursue education and return to their communities to contribute to the local art scene. She believes in the transformative potential of art in keeping communities alive and vibrant. Furthermore, Riesto has been instrumental in promoting Kveen art, encouraging artists to explore their cultural heritage and rediscover aspects of their identity that may have been lost over generations, such as language and traditions.

Through her leadership and vision, Kirsti Riesto has played a pivotal role in enriching both the cultural identity of the Kven community and the artistic landscape of Vadsø.
