February 26, 2025Theatre promoting and evolving Kven culture
Frank Jorstad and Inger Birkelund discuss the establishment and vision of the Kvääniteatteri in Norway. Frank, an experienced actor and director, serves as the theatre director and sees the theatre as an “identity factory” aimed at promoting and evolving Kven language and culture through the arts. Inger, with her background in business, education, and culture, played a key role in founding the theatre as an administrative leader and producer.
They reflect on the challenges of creating a professional theatre, from securing funding to gaining legitimacy and support from the Kven community. They emphasize the importance of involving both locals and external perspectives to ensure authenticity and a broader understanding of the Kven identity. Additionally, they highlight the theatre’s role in preserving the Kven language, showcasing it on stage, and fostering discussions and connections within the community.
